AVAA Introduction Who We Are
.

Established in 1952, the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (AVAA) is the peak national body for auctioneers and valuers, providing leadership, advocacy and professional standards for a highly specialised and economically important sector. For more than seven decades, AVAA has set the benchmark for professionalism, ethical practice and public confidence in auctioneering and valuation across Australia.

At the centre of AVAA’s work are the AVAA Certified Auctioneer (CAAu) and AVAA Certified Valuer (CVAu) credentials. These nationally recognised designations represent more than experience alone. They reflect adherence to defined professional standards, ongoing education, ethical obligations and accountability to peers and the broader community. Through these credentials, AVAA provides a clear and trusted signal to clients, industry and government that members meet contemporary expectations of professionalism.

AVAA represents Certified Auctioneers and Certified Valuers working across fine art, antiques and collectables, goods and chattels, automotive vehicles, aircraft and watercraft, and plant and equipment. Our members operate in diverse commercial, legal and regulatory environments, bringing independent expertise and disciplined professional judgment to complex transactions and valuations. The CAAu and CVAu professional credentials ensure this work is underpinned by consistency, integrity and confidence.

Legal Structure and Governance —

AVAA operates as an incorporated, not-for-profit association, consistent with the nation’s other leading national professional bodies. Governance is firmly member-driven, with an elected Board providing strategic oversight and stewardship on behalf of the membership. This structure ensures that AVAA’s standards, policies and advocacy priorities remain aligned with the profession while maintaining independence, transparency and strong ethical foundations.

Membership —

AVAA’s membership structure recognises both individual professionals and businesses, with clearly defined pathways that culminate in the CAAu and CVAu credentials. Members benefit from professional recognition, structured continuing professional development, and engagement with peers who are committed to lifting standards across the sector. AVAA credentials reinforce credibility in the marketplace and support members to differentiate themselves through professionalism.

National Reach —

AVAA is the only national organisation representing both auctioneers and valuers across Australia. With members in every state and territory, AVAA promotes consistent professional standards across metropolitan, regional and rural markets, supporting confidence wherever auctioneering and valuation services are delivered.

Activities and Advocacy —

AVAA delivers education, training and professional development, convenes major national events such as the AVC26 Conference, and leads advocacy on regulatory and policy issues affecting the profession. Our advocacy is grounded in member experience and focused on practical outcomes that support ethical practice, reduce unnecessary regulatory burden and strengthen trust in the sector.

The CAAu and CVAu professional credentials represent the benchmark established professionals aspire to, reflecting trust, ethics and expertise, and explain why AVAA continues to attract members and grow as a community.

Guided by the 2025–30 AVAA Strategic Plan, the Association works collaboratively with industry, government and community stakeholders to advance professionalism and influence policy settings. Through standards, credentials and advocacy, AVAA ensures auctioneers and valuers are recognised as trusted professionals within Australia’s regulatory and commercial frameworks.

Working with AVAA is a partnership in professionalism. Whether as a member, industry partner, government agency or media stakeholder, engagement with AVAA provides access to recognised credentials, authoritative standards and informed advocacy that strengthen outcomes for the sector as a whole.
