Valuing Fine & Decorative Arts & Antiques

Developed by the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (AVAA), this course provides an accessible introduction to the fascinating field of fine and decorative arts and antiques valuation. Designed for those beginning their journey, it offers a structured pathway to understand the complexities and responsibilities of valuing items across this broad and specialist area.

Learners are supported through flexible, self-paced study, enabling them to build knowledge progressively while balancing other commitments. The course combines foundational concepts with applied skills, giving students confidence to approach valuations with curiosity, accuracy, and a growing appreciation of professional expectations and standards.

Module 1 – Introduction to valuing

Learn the fundamentals of valuation, exploring property types, ethics, and legal responsibilities. This module builds essential knowledge and confidence to approach valuation tasks professionally and responsibly within the industry.

Module 2 – Introduction to valuing fine and decorative arts and antiques

Examine the valuation process for fine and decorative arts. This module covers methodologies, determinants of value, and market influences, preparing students for specialist practice in this diverse professional field.

Module 3A – Valuation of paintings and sculpture

Explore fine art through painting and sculpture. This module highlights stylistic, historical, and contextual factors influencing value, guiding students in accurate and responsible assessment of artworks within valuation practice.

Module 3B – Valuation of Aboriginal art, prints and photography

Focus on Aboriginal art, prints, and photography. This module develops awareness of authenticity, cultural significance, and market dynamics, equipping students with knowledge essential for valuing these categories ethically and effectively.

Module 4 – Valuation of porcelain, ceramics and glass

Investigate porcelain, ceramics, and glass by studying traditions, production techniques, and stylistic characteristics. This module equips students to identify, assess, and value these items confidently within decorative arts practice.

Module 5 – Valuation of furniture

Study furniture across English, European, and Australian traditions. This module explores craftsmanship, stylistic development, and provenance, giving students insights necessary to perform meaningful and accurate furniture valuations.

Module 6 – Valuation of silver, metalware and jewellery

Gain knowledge of silver, metalware, and jewellery. This module balances technical detail, stylistic appreciation, and cultural context, enabling students to approach valuations confidently and with professional responsibility.

Module 7 – Valuation of specialist items

Discover valuation of specialist categories including toys, dolls, coins, medals, stamps, and tribal art. This module fosters adaptability and curiosity in handling diverse and unusual valuation tasks.

Module 8 – Fine and decorative arts and antiques valuation reports

Learn to prepare professional valuation reports. This module focuses on structure, criteria, and disclaimers, ensuring findings are presented transparently, accurately, and in accordance with professional reporting standards.
