Australian Online Auction Compliance Program

The Australian Online Auction Compliance Program has been developed to help online auction businesses strengthen cyber security, data protection and regulatory compliance while building greater trust with buyers and vendors. As online auctions continue to grow across Australia, customers increasingly expect auction platforms to demonstrate strong safeguards around personal information, payment security and online transactions.

Designed specifically for corporate members of the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (AVAA), this program focuses on the operation of online auction platforms rather than the broader business. It provides a practical framework to help auction houses reduce cyber security risks, minimise the likelihood of data breaches and demonstrate a commitment to protecting client information.

Participation in the program can deliver significant commercial benefits. Strong privacy and cyber security practices help protect business reputation, reduce the risk of costly incidents, support regulatory compliance and provide confidence to insurers, suppliers and commercial partners. For many auction businesses, effective cyber governance is becoming an important competitive advantage. To support implementation, AVAA has developed four specialist four risk and compliance policy templates:

Australian Online Auction Compliance Templates —

◾ Privacy Policy
◾ Information Security Management Policy
◾ Cyber Security Policy
◾ Compliance with PCI Data Security Standards

These resources assist businesses conducting online auctions to address many of the key risks associated with operating online auction platforms and processing electronic payments.

The Australian Online Auction Compliance Program also benefits vendors and buyers by promoting higher standards of information security. Customers entrust auction houses with personal details, bidding histories, payment information and transaction records. Clear policies and documented procedures help reassure clients that their information is being managed responsibly and securely.

The templates have been designed to save businesses the time and cost of developing policies from scratch. They provide a structured starting point that can assist businesses establish documented procedures, demonstrate due diligence and strengthen internal governance arrangements.
