Standard Agreement For A Valuer’s Appointment
The AVAA Standard Agreement for the Engagement of a Valuer is a practical professional resource developed to support valuation businesses throughout Australia. Designed specifically for professional valuers, the agreement provides a consistent framework for client engagement, valuation instructions, risk management, and the delivery of professional valuation services.
Developed by valuers for valuers with the support of the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (AVAA), the agreement addresses many of the issues that commonly arise during client engagements. It helps establish clear expectations regarding the scope of work, valuation purpose, fees, client responsibilities, report use, confidentiality, assumptions, limitations, and dispute resolution processes.
The agreement (i.e. contract between the valuer and their client) has been designed for use across a broad range of valuation disciplines, including fine art, antiques, collectables, jewellery, motor vehicles, plant and machinery, business assets, livestock, marine assets, aircraft, books, stamps, coins, memorabilia, household contents, and goods and chattels. Its flexible structure allows valuers to tailor the document to their particular area of practice.
AVAA Standard Agreement Key Features —
◾ Clearly defines scope, purpose, assumptions and limitations.
◾ Strengthens client engagement documentation and professional accountability.
◾ Reduces risk of disputes and misunderstandings arising.
◾ Clarifies fees, expenses, payment terms and obligations.
◾ Protects valuers through reliance and liability provisions.
◾ Supports consistent professional practice across asset classes.
A well-constructed engagement agreement is one of the most important risk management tools available to a professional valuer. By clearly documenting the terms of appointment at the outset, the agreement helps reduce misunderstandings, supports professional practice, and promotes greater certainty for both valuers and their clients.
The AVAA Standard Agreement for the Engagement of a Valuer is provided without charge to AVAA Corporate Members as part of their membership benefits. Holders of the AVAA Certified Valuer (CVAu) credential may also subscribe to the agreement for an annual fee of $185pa, providing affordable access to this valuable professional resource.
AVAA Standard Agreement Status —
The AVAA Standard Agreement for the Engagement of a Valuer is currently in development and is expected to be released in September 2026.
The AVAA Standard Agreement for the Engagement of a Valuer aligns with AVAA Professional Standards, helping members implement consistent engagement practices, manage risk, clarify client expectations, and support compliance with recognised professional and ethical requirements.
The release of this agreement demonstrates AVAA’s commitment to developing practical tools that support professional excellence, business sustainability, and client confidence. Whether you are an established valuation practice or an individual practitioner seeking to strengthen your engagement processes, the agreement provides another compelling reason to apply for AVAA Corporate Membership or the AVAA Certified Valuer (CVAu) credential.
