A new suite of draft professional standards have been released for public comment by the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (AVAA), providing members, industry stakeholders and the broader community with an important opportunity to help shape the future of professionalism in the valuation and auction sectors.

The AVAA Professional Standards play a critical role in defining what clients, courts, government agencies, insurers and the public can reasonably expect from a professional valuer or auctioneer. They establish clear expectations around conduct, competency, risk management, client engagement and professional practice. As the valuation and auction industries continue to evolve, these standards help ensure that professional obligations remain contemporary, practical and aligned with community expectations.

The latest draft standards cover a range of important areas including auction conduct, professional indemnity insurance, complaints handling, conflicts of interest, cyber security, expert witness practice, engagement terms, record keeping, valuation instructions and reliance, anti-money laundering obligations and the use of technology in professional practice.

The draft standards and consultation materials can be accessed via the AVAA Professional Standards portal at:

Importantly, the AVAA Professional Standards underpin the respected AVAA Certified Valuer (CVAu) and AVAA Certified Auctioneer (CAAu) professional credentials. These respected designations provide independent recognition of competency, experience and commitment to professional standards. The standards help ensure that holders of the CVAu and CAAu credentials operate within a consistent framework that promotes quality, accountability and public confidence.

Professional standards are most effective when they reflect the collective expertise of the profession. Whether you are an experienced practitioner, a business owner, an educator, a government representative, a service provider or a consumer of valuation and auction services, your feedback can help strengthen the final documents and ensure they remain practical, relevant and effective.

This consultation process represents an opportunity to contribute directly to the development of the benchmarks that will influence professional practice across Australia. The standards are intended not only to guide AVAA members but also to contribute to a broader understanding of valuation and auction excellence throughout the sector.

AVAA encourages all interested parties to review the draft standards and provide constructive feedback during the public comment period. Every submission received will be carefully considered by the AVAA Membership & Professional Standards Committee before the final standards are presented to the AVAA Board for approval.

By participating in the consultation process, stakeholders can help shape the standards that will define professionalism, strengthen public trust and support the continued advancement of valuation and auction practice in Australia.  Comment is open until 10 July 2026.
