One of the best ways individuals and businesses can protect themselves when engaging an auctioneer is by choosing a member of the Auctioneers and Valuers Association of Australia (AVAA). Recent incidents across Australia have highlighted the risks associated with non-member operators, where clients have later encountered limited transparency, accountability and professional oversight when concerns emerged.
Over the course of this year, AVAA has received complaints where individuals and businesses have unfortunately found themselves burnt after using non-member operators, later discovering there was little transparency, limited accountability and no independent professional body available to assist when concerns emerged.
For many people, engaging an auctioneer involves significant financial and emotional decisions. Auctions are often connected to deceased estates, insolvency matters, downsizing, insurance claims, business asset disposals and the sale of valuable personal collections accumulated over decades. In these situations, professionalism, integrity and proper process matter enormously.
Despite the complaints against non-members, AVAA believes that these incidents should not diminish confidence in the Australian auction sector more broadly. Australia has many highly capable auctioneers and auction businesses delivering excellent outcomes for clients every day. However, the reality is that not every operator chooses to align themselves with AVAA’s recognised professional standards, ongoing professional development or independent accountability mechanisms.
This is one of the reasons many consumers, businesses, legal professionals and insolvency practitioners increasingly choose to work with AVAA Member companies and AVAA Certified Auctioneers (CAAu).
AVAA Members voluntarily commit themselves to the AVAA Code of Practice together with a suite of professional standards covering issues such as professional conduct, auction client fund handling, continuing professional development, advertising representations and broader business practices. These standards are designed to support transparency, professionalism and confidence within the sector.
Just as importantly, AVAA membership provides accountability.
On the very rare occasion a complaint or concern arises involving an AVAA Member company, there is a recognised and transparent framework through which the matter can be considered. Professional standards establish clear expectations around conduct and provide an avenue for concerns to be reviewed fairly and appropriately.
By contrast, when people engage non-member operators, they often discover there is no recognised code of practice, no independent standards framework and no external professional oversight. In practical terms, many find themselves largely on their own when disputes arise.
Professional membership also says something important about a business itself.
Businesses that become AVAA Corporate Members, and individuals with the AVAA Certified Auctioneer (CAAu) credential, are making a public statement that they support recognised standards, ethical conduct, continuing professional development and professional accountability. Increasingly, sophisticated clients are looking for those signals before entrusting businesses with valuable assets or important commercial transactions.
Consumers should also recognise that impressive advertising, aggressive promises or large social media profiles are not substitutes for the professionalism, standards and accountability offered by AVAA members. The difference between operators can become very apparent when something goes wrong.
Choosing an AVAA Member business and working with AVAA Certified Auctioneers (CAAu) helps provide greater confidence that the business is operating within a recognised professional framework designed to protect both the client and the long-term reputation of the sector itself.
